From Katrina: SDMA has sent us the names of students that they have invited to join one of their mentoring programs. This year, we have sections of UNIV 101 that are associated with those mentoring programs. If you receive a handout to include with the students’ packet, it means that they are one of the invited students. This handout will give them information on the different programs and lists the specific sections of UNIV 101 the students will need to take. At this point, the students have not been selected for the programs yet, as the deadline to apply is July 14. However, if they are seriously planning on applying, they can/should enroll in the UNIV 101 associated with the specific mentoring program they are interested in. If they don’t end up joining the program, we will simply enroll them into a different UNIV 101 section later in the summer. An important note: FYRE, Bridge, Honors and Engineering students should not take one of the SDMA sections. Students in any of these programs should take the UNIV 101 associated with the academic program they are in.
This is what I plan on saying to students:
” I understand that our Student Diversity and Multicultural Affairs office has invited you to apply to one of their mentoring programs. Here is more information on the different programs and a reminder that the deadline to apply is July 14. If you are interested in pursuing this opportunity, you can enroll in one of these UNIV 101 sections that is associated with the program tomorrow. If you don’t end up joining, we can always change your schedule later in the summer. Take a look at this, think about it and let me know tomorrow.”
